So I've worked a little more on my picture. I like the new colourful background, but I'm also missing the loss of the white paper. I feel like I've gone overboard with colour again, as I feared I would!
It's not finished, but I may give it a few days to think about my next move.
Taking a break to think is a great idea. I haven't returned yet to my Hollyhocks image and its been a few days. I personally really liked the white. I can see where the colors you've chosen for your background can also work if you darkened the foliage around the birds. Many are the same values as the background and that makes them blend in too much. But I do see where you have used a dark green around the lower bird and that looks so amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the vote on that dark green, it was my favourite aspect of the background. Still experimenting - only with a bit of purple this time.
DeleteNo, I don't think you've overdone the colour. It makes the cockatoos stand out more. The first drawing was a bit 'wishy-washy', although I know it wasn't finished. With white cockatoos I think you can have too much white background. I agree with Linda, I think it needs a few highlights somewhere to lift it a bit. Good idea to take a break and think about it.
ReplyDeleteIt does push the cockatoos out more, but I'm being such a nervous nelly on where to go from here. I was thinking of playing with highlights and shadows, but I'll see where that takes me. I suspect I'll be at this a while before showing any more, or it will just look mostly the same, lol.
ReplyDeleteI like it. It does make the cockatoos stand out, more visible. I'd like to see the background bolder / darker!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your feedback Leigh. I know what you mean by bolder background. I've been trying and had some limited success. Problem with the watercolour is, it wants to stay light! Will do an update with my progress soon.
